A Personal Message about the Community Server Inbox

Someone sent me an email last evening saying they PM'd (Personal Messaged) me at cs.org several days ago and that I hadn't gotten back to them.  PM me???  Oh, that Inbox top right-hand link at CommunityServer.org.  So I thought I'd better open it.  Thirty-eight messages!  Geez, apologies to everyone who didn't get a response.  I answered those that I hadn't already responded to in a forums post or some other means, and for those over two months old I figured I'd let go since they already think I'm a schmuck and it's too late to do much about that.

Community Server needs some sort of animated icon instead of a static "inbox" link, an icon that does something to get your attention when you've got mail, something like an icon that Eric Duncan used in an email the other day with a fat jolly smiley rolling on the floor in hysterics.  Or maybe the icon could be user-defined.  I recently saw an animated icon of a female jogger that was rather, umm, bouncy.  I'd like to use that!  Anything to provide a better UI indication that other members in the community want to talk to you.

But wait, thanks to the open architecture of Community Server (why we love it so, don't ya know), anyone can add functionality they think is missing from the base package.  And with Personal Messages, Rich Mercer, a former Community Server MVP and now with Telligent, has written an excellent Notifications module that extends the Community Server PM function.  I don't know if it supports user-defined notification icons or not though.

Postscript: I promise to do better checking my PM inbox, but the behavior of old dogs is hard to change.  Please email me at davebu at telligent.com to make sure I get your message.

Speaking of old dogs, looks like the ex-Microsoftie(s) have trouble learning new tricks. 'davebu' ??? Hmmm, wonder where they got that idea from Smile

HEHEHEHE!  That's an email address of honor, John!  That was the one special thing I asked for when I was hired with Telligent.  I wanted my email address to be davebu @ telligent.com in honor of (you know who, of course), Scott Guthrie at scottgu @ microsoft.com.  ScottG is such an incredible positive force for Microsoft and has gone out of his way to help me and others.  btw, dburke @ telligent.com works, too, which is the conventional email username format at Telligent.

Actually, the scottgu handle didn't come from me.  Tim Haines from New Zealand started calling me that.

I hope you're having a beautiful day in New Hampshire, John.

Thanks for the beautiful day wish but, alas, I've been stuck indoors at the keyboard all day. I am trying to "one up ya" though by getting a decent photo of the flock of wild turkeys that have moved into the neighborhood. They roost in the trees in our back yard but w/ the time of day and failing light it's hard - too lazy (er...busy) to camp out in hiding and wait. Although, turkeys are pretty gullible - I could stand still in the yard and pretend I'm a tree!

Funny you should mention MS aliases...I do believe that whoever doles out email addresses for new hires purposely comes up with so-called "clever" combinations of first name/last name...however it backfired in my case: the year I was at MS, my alias was jaknig. Needless to say it offended more than one person and they promptly changed it.

Ok, I realize alias doling out at MS is completely automated, but the rest of the story is true Wink.
