A brief intro to Gallery Server Pro

I've blogged very little about my photo gallery, Kevin Martin's Open Source application Gallery Server Pro.  It's very impressive, full featured and rock solid.  It's a media gallery and supports much more than photos, but that's all I plan to do with it for now.

I really like how it handles .ZIPs of multiple images on upload and automatically extracts and processes the individual images.  Uploading images is extremely easy and fast.

I also love the options you have with the image.  I circled the "triangle" icon because it may not be obvious that it launches the slideshow, which is very sweet in that the slideshow images can be medium or large, based on the size of the image being viewed when you launch the slideshow.

Below are photos of my home town of Red Lion, PA, taken during the recent Memorial Day weekend.  The album is located here.    Be sure to check out the slideshow feature.

There's a nice easter egg when you click the infomation icon Smile

BTW, how do you find the integration of GalleryPro and WLW (assuming you use WLW)?

I'm not impressed with the latest CS and what it does for thumbnail images of existing posts and for writting new posts. It's a big step backward (in the broken direction).

Rory, Great to hear from you.  Easter Egg?  You mean the "view info about this media object" and the blank popup?  That's actually very rich if you use it, which I'm not.  I should disable it. Thanks for mentioning it.  Here's a sample from Ken Martin's demo site where it's used as it should be.

I need to come up with something for integration with WLW.  GSP stores full, medium and thumbnail images in a category folder by folder name and image name.  You can direct link to them as I did with the thumbnails in this post, but it screams for an add-on.  All the pieces are there, it's just typing it out.

I start a big CS2008 project later this month.  I have a feeling I'll be singing in the same row of the chorus as you, Rory.

Hey Dave,

Thanks for your BE.Net posts BTW. They have been very interesting.

Hmmm, maybe you see something different. I see the result of alert('True'); when I click the info button.

I have been really happy with CS until now. I think it will take me a lot of work to get the site back to displaying images in posts they way it used to. Oh well....

I've been very interested in the BE.Net migration you did. I think I will wait until they have an integrated gallery though.

Rory,

Thanks for the additional info on the "Easter Egg."  Another reason to get rid of the icon.

The CS to BE.NET migration was super easy.  I need to get off my butt and put my SQL migration script online.

There's a BE Photo project on CodePlex, but its a dead-end move since it wasn't designed into BE.NET's architecture (lots of provider changes) making upgrades impossible.

Here's a screenshot if you're interested.  You'll probably see it again if I ever write the post I plan titled "How NOT to design an Open Source Add-in."

Dave,
I'm in the same Chorus line as yourself and Rory. I have a CS migration candidate waiting for your two Blog Posts titled: "GalleryServerPro & BE.NET integration for dummies" and "CS > BE migration script". I'm sure I'm not the only one eagerly awaiting these top-topics. Great stuff.

Nick,  I will be delighted to give an assist to one of my favorite Brits.  Still on vacation so consumption is high and production is low, but both will be in the queue for next week.  Thanks for the explicit reminder and don't forget to ping me if specific issues arise.
