A proposal to change the name of .Text

".Text" is a beautiful name, like the name of my high school girlfriend is beautiful.  Her name was rather ordinary, but it was her name and will always be special to me for that reason.

But let's be honest. There are problems with the word ".Text." Who says "text" when they talk about our sweet blogging application?  It's always DOT-text.

It's also incredibly uncomfortable to end a sentence with .Text.  ".Text." with a period before AND after?  Please don't tell William Zinsser or William Strunk Jr. I EVER wrote that sentence!

But the real reason I am proposing a name change is because its damned impossible to search on ".text" and retrieve meaningful information about, um, .Text.

Therefore, I propose to the knights and damsels of the .Text Society of Cool that we officially and from this day forth change the name of .Text to dotText

Seriously.  I think this is a good idea and while I have alternated between both spellings, I am going to try to use dotText as the standard spelling for dotText on my blog.  I put this proposal in a humorous light, but its actually an important issue.  Maybe its the ALA Accredited Librarian in me talking, or maybe just a dotText coder with a grammatical dream of consistency and high search retrieval rates.

Think about it.

Couldn't agree more. With the forums being a bit slow sometimes, trying to find info on Google is hopeless. So changing it to dotText would be very nice.

Community Server will probably be a problem too.  There's already a Python Community Server, just check Google to see.

Thanks for your comments, guys (and for the link, Gary).  Now when I search for dotText I'll at least be able to find good info from Sahil and Kaisa!

Doesn't matter anyway now, because it's changing to community server :: blogs!

ps. where did you get the anti-spam mod from?!

Alastair, I think dotText will be around for a while to come.  Here's a link to my CAPTCHA anti-spam implementation.  Let me know if you need more info.

That's great, Chee Wee.  I've been making an effort to use dotText, too!  Hmm, should the "d" be capitalized or lowercase? Smile
