Adding ASPNET support to IIS in Windows 2000 and 2003

Keywords: ASPNET IIS Extensions Enable 2000 2003 Windows Angst

Weird when it rains it pours IIS ASP.NET configuration requirements.  A rebuilt W2K3 Server and prepping a W2K Server for .NET Beta 2 afforded me the opportunity to add ASP.NET support on both platforms on the same day.  And its one of those things you forget.  "Hmm, what did I not re-install yet???"

Nope, to add ASP.NET support to IIS in W2K3, you install ASP.NET through the Add Programs control panel, then allow it in IIS Web Service Extensions.  Here's an excellent tutorial.

For Windows 2000, best course is ASPNET_REGIIS which you run at the command line with the -i  parameter.

Now a quick search of my blog on "angst" and I'll have it.

Allow it in IIS Web Service Extensions - Yep, ran into this one myself.  I was scratching my heading thinking, I don't have any notes or remember any specific changes for a standard asp page to work.  hehe, fun stuff.

Right!  One of those things you do just enough to have to remember each time how you did it the last time!  And yeap, there's a web service extension to allow .ASP, too.

Hmmm dave... I have two words of advice for your soon to be adventure...

"Virtual Server"

This leaves your whole OS Et Al in tact, you can run and upgrade it at will (cause a new build will be out next month)...  And cause SQL wont usually work right on the same machine as VS.NET...

The new beta Virtual Server is 40% faster and file compatable with virtual PC, so you can build your VPC files, then host them up from your PC over remote desktop...  This also helps me blur the lines between playing at work and playing at home... Cause my VPC is running remotely...

Dan, Thanks.  Its not the first time VPC has been recommended to me.  WIll keep my mind and options open before I cross that threshold of no turning back.
