Bits for April 8, 2008

Join the Iranian Guard.  Boost your .NET Productivity!  Our friend Keyvan Nayyeri who lives in Tehran and currently serves in the Iranian Military is on a productivity tear!  Very impressive output from this young man.  His new Wrox book titled Visual Studio Extensibility is now available on Amazon, and I'm very much looking forward to the final installment of Keyvan's four part ASPAlliance "Building a Simple Blog Engine with ASP.NET MVC and LINQ" article.  These kids today.  When I was in the Army back in the 70's we listened to rock-n-roll real loud and did a lot of heavy drugs to pass the time.

Tooltips are righteous. I like the AJAX Tooltip extender control CJ de Vos blogs about.  Community Server has a sweet little HelpToolTip control that I've customized for my dbvt.com blog home pages and describe here, but you can't focus on it and do other cool things with it like you can this AJAX tooltip extender.

That's a lot of pills, man. Ray Kurzweil is a pop culture icon.  He's a brilliant inventor and futurist whose Singularity is Near is a must-read.  I re-listened to two Ray Kurzweil podcasts on the drive back from Code Camp on Sunday and enjoyed them immensely.  Kurzweil, who is 60, wants to be around to enjoy the benefits of the Singularity when it hits.  Check out the pills this guys takes every day.   And I thought 4 pills a day to control my cholesterol and blood pressure were a lot.

Chat isn't just for Gen-X'ers anymore. I hate chat on general principle.  It makes no sense to me, since picking up the phone is more efficient 90% of the time.  I had to install Microsoft Live Messenger when I was with Telligent but I haven't used it since.  Well, I did use it once with Keyvan to walk through an IIS setup issue, and it was great for that, but that was the only time in the past year.  I was setting up an IRA online at TD Ameritrade the other day and had questions.  Who's supposed to understand that stuff, anyway?  They provided a Chat feature and it was fantastic!  By fantastic I mean extremely helpful and something which gives me incentive to do more business with TD Ameritrade in the future.

Creative RSS Feed icons. Check out the creative RSS Feed icons on this Smashing Magazine article.  We developers do need our artistic friends.

Congrats to the Jayhawks. March Madness ended for me Saturday night when North Carolina lost to Kansas.  I didn't even watch Monday's game.  I follow teams, not sports, and my teams are North Carolina in NCAA basketball and the Pittsburgh Steelers.  Kansas fans must be on top of the world today, beating Roy Williams and now Memphis.  Good for them.  I loved a quote from a Kansas fan after Saturday's game, something like, "Now Carolina can deal with what Williams always did at Kansas, get to the big game and then choke."  Bill Self definitely out-coached Williams and deserves the accolades he's receiving.  Congrats Jayhawks!

Thank you, Dave Smile

Hope all this stuff was for my military status but actually they're not! I have no doubt that I could do much more if I was outside. However, in six months, it will be gone!

Yes, I know that there are many guys here who spend their time with rock and roll (or local traditional genres) and drugs so it's not a matter of time Wink

Btw, the fourth part is already sent to ASP Alliance and would be published in next 10 days.

Thanks again Smile

Keyvan, you really are doing a lot of great work, especially while being in the military.  I'm glad to hear there are still some young fellows who are getting through the military the same way I did.  I hope they don't detract from your productivity too much. Smile

Was I correct that your next LINQ/MVC article on Views concludes the series?  After reading the 3rd article again, there might be additional articles as well.  And will you be releasing the source with the final article?  I know I'll learn a lot from it if you ever do release it.

Wow, only 6 more months with the military.  It went fast!  Congrats.  Take care and thanks for stopping by.

This is why it makes no sense to me that CommunityServer, in it's third update, still has no chat. Why? To end up using a third party product called CuteSoft Chat? Come on Telligent - you keep talking about how CS is THE Social Platform - yet fail to even do the basics. Sorry Dave, I realize you're not with Telligent anymore - but your post provided a nice outlet to vent.

HA!  John, you're welcome.  You can vent here anytime.  I thought chat was part of CS2008 messaging though?  Guess we'll find out soon enough.  Yeah, CuteSoft Chat with CS was always more trouble than it was worth.  Thanks for visiting!

Dave,

Yes, I was going to cover Views in the fourth part but I thought it's better to talk about unit testing at this point so in the fourth part I covered theoretical concepts around unit testing and in the fifth part I'll apply it in the KBlog and here will be the point that I'll release the source code.

Thank you for your interest and for everything Smile

Thanks for the clarification, Keyvan.  I'll be looking forward to each part!
