CS20 : We're up!

We'll, we're up!  A new Community Server 2.0 has been born.  Or as Lewis Bodine says to Brock Lovett as Rose lands on the deck of the ship, "She marries this guy named Calvert, they move to Cedar Rapids and she punches out a couple of kids. Now Calvert's dead, and from what I hear Cedar Rapids is dead!"

So we punched out CS 2.0 this morning to the directory on WebHost4Life that housed my CS 1.1 blog, my CS 1.0 blog, and dotText blog before that.  While I was at it I also upgraded my WH4L site to .NET 2.0, which I did before trashing the old site and dumping the CS 2.0 into place, of course.  CS 2.0 running on .NET 2.0.  Liken' it!

I'll try to list the highlights of this new site, some of which I mentioned before and need to detail.

  • Uniformed page styles across the site.  Used the default Master Pages, themes and skins.  Changed the look a bit all around.
  • Several new skin controls, like a Link Box on the site home page
  • Added my iTunes library mod as a separate site area with its own master page and skins.
  • Smarter sidebar blog controls that appear or disappear based on whether we're on the blog home page.
  • Added a Titles-Only Display for Archives and Categories.  The new abbreviated post display is sweet, but I still wanted a titles-only display for more efficient perusal
  • Added my Netflix Queue mod
  • Added a CSModule (my first!) using CS 2.0 TextParts to create Technorati Tags for my posts.  Will detail that and put it on communityserver.org soon.  Pretty slick, actually, and much nicer than my CS 1.1 mod.
  • Modified the CS 2.0 FreeTextbox Wrapper Content Selector modal page to work better for me and added a CSModule to wrap HTML around it.  More later on those.
  • Added a simple CAPTCHA control.  Yeah, I know CAPTCHA is SOOO 2003, but ReverseDOS kicked my ass today and CAPTCHA works.  (Tell ya about it later.)
  • Many, many little things, like replacing the display of my account name "daveburke" with Dave Burke, removed "Posted by Dave Burke" (of COURSE it's posted by Dave Burke), formatting out the ying-yang and other anal stuff to suit me.

Those are the highlights that I can think of now.  I haven't tested everything here in the real world.  Heck, I don't even know if this thing will get posted or not.

If it does, let me welcome you to another version of my blog!

Welcome to CS 2.0 ;)
Nice new look. What did happen to your CoComment script? It didn't appear in your page source.
I'm stand here to see your comments about ReverseDOS. CAPTCHA is being used in many websites and weblogs yet but RevereseDOS is great replacement for it in .NET powered tools. Anyway, First I would read your comments about it ;)

Site looks awesome, Dave. Makes me want to get into CS skinning myself! Can you create skins using Visual Web Developer Express, I wonder? I assume you need the CS source to do so.

Keyvan, thanks!  I should have mentioned that I was giving the site some online time before re-applying CoComment support.  Besides, I'm waiting to hear back from our Man Jayson Knight who seems to have taken down CoComment support, too.  May be the new comment display mod he added.  But yes, I want to add CoComments again.  I also know its slightly different in CS 2.0, NET 2.0 than CS 1.1, NET 1.1.  And yeah, I'll post on ReverseDOS, hopefully today.  Thanks for visiting!

Mabster, what do you mean, Developer Express???  A coding stud like you?  The Comicster himself?  Yes, there is a LOT of touching the source when changing the skins.  That's the way of it.  Anytime you add a label or remove one, you need to touch the source or you'll get an null object reference error.  Thanks for saying HEY! and the kind words, Mabster Man.

Dave, I was hoping you'd stop by.  Thanks!  Dang, you're the CS 3rd guy who tells me he loves ReverseDOS.  I'll post my RDOS story soon (doing real work today, first Smile, so maybe one of you guys will tell me what stupid config thing I was doing and I'll go back to it again.

Good news on the site Dave!  For a little support on the ReverseDOS front - I've got it installed and has worked wonders but I still have CAPTCHA as well.

Oh, man.  Erik, you TOO???   I don't know what I did to screw up reverseDOS, but it was a train wreck when I was setting up the site at my web host.  I'll post more about it when I'm not doing real work.

Jayson's CoCo is up and running as well and have no problem. If you are using .NET 2.0 for CS 2.0 he had a fix for form names in ASP.NET 2.0 and you can apply it.
And for .NET 1.1, I'm using it and have no problem.

Dave - I saw your comments on the communityserver forums.  Can't wait to read the whole low down.  Real work first, I know.  Dang jobs!  Smile

And here you thought it was gonna take a couple of weeks!  The site looks bada**, great work.

I can't WAIT to hear about the issue you ran into with ReverseDOS...all these commenters can't be wrong Wink.

As for coco, it's still there on my site same as it ever was.  Now get back to your *real* work!

At the risk of straying off-topic... Smile

I am in love with the Express editions of Visual Studio. I use the big-iron stuff here at work, but Comicster is developed completely in Express, and that's a point of pride for me: It's freeware that was free to develop. Even the source-control I use at home (Vault single-user) is free! Can't beat that!

"Big-iron stuff..."  Funny!  As for being an Express Man, you wouldn't think a guy with a name like Mabster would be so ardent about sticking to principles.
