forum beta bits
- Two interesting upgrade bits from Jose, the fact that blog owners are no longer stored as extended attributes and that only if photo and file galleries have the same appkey are they merged during the upgrade process.
- ScottW informs us that Community Server 2008 no long supports storing files in the database. I always turn off the database storage option, so I'm definitely fine with it. There are other new storage options as Scott explains.
- There have been a number of observations on the CS2008 Media Gallery UI being very "file-oriented." Ben assures us that it will be more "media oriented," and that the Beta 1 was using the CS2007 file gallery theme.
- There may be a number of issues that arise in migrating to groups for those wanting to take advantage of CS2008 Hubs. Here Wyatt lists two new migration-to-group documentation pages.
- A CS2008 group is 1 blog, 1 forum and 1 media gallery. Plan accordingly.
- Creating new CS2008 widgets is easy. Documentation is coming. They are implementations of CommunityServer.Components.IContentFragment. Okay, so what's a widget?
- Apparently the Safari editor show-stopper for some has been resolved in CS2008 with the latest TinyMCE 3.0 upgrade. I'm liking the CS2008 editor experience on cs.org, though there seems to be some residual weirdness like horizontal lines sporadically appearing in the editor textarea.
- Ben lists a few of the new changes to Chameleon. I didn't grasp the details from this brief overview, but Ben writes fantastic posts at Release Time. He did with CS2007 anyway.
- Jose lists Forum improvements. Permission refinements, sidebar widget support, full viewer support, forum control panel improvements. Doesn't sound like a lot of forum improvements to me, but I'm not much of a forums guy anyway.
- Ben tells us there's a new CSMedia:MediaGalleryPostViewer control to view and preview media gallery files.
- There's a new Centralized File System provider in CS2008. Ben gives us some introductory info.
- There's a new Activity Messaging API in CS2008. Here Jose provides a list of supported ActivityMessageTypes.
- This is interesting, Component Art won't be around in CS2008. ScottW with reasons why.
- A very interesting thread between some pretty insightful developers and Ben on having more ability to customize and extend the file upload process. Ben was apparently already thinking along those lines and shared the logic of a sweet architecture involving an exposed PostAttachment event and support for custom file viewers to be registered in the <FileViewers> region of the cs.config. I do love how that man thinks! Ben mentioned in a later post that there is a new CSMedia control in CS2008 that supports uploading multiple files at once.
- Easier expansion of the User Registration form is on the way in CS2008. Ben explains how the new fields can be placed on the theme page and registered with the control, no longer requiring the development of SubForms.
- The price of the Professional License in CS2008 is going up. RobH will have the details online tomorrow.
