DVD R.I.P.

Business 2.0 December 2004 has an article investigating co-founder of Broadcast.com Mark Cuban's move in the High Definition space with HD-Net and HDNet Movies and as it being somewhat heretical.  (Maybe heretical like a fox...)

Cuban's opinion is that DVDs suck, or at least inferior to hard drives as a medium for storing digital content.  “With ever-expanding storage, we can increase picture quality for years to come by taking advantage of new cameras and better compression schemes.  With DVDs, we can't.”

This is stone cold true and the DVD will rule for a smaller window than VHS.  After using a DVR for the last 9 months and On Demand services from my local cable provider for the last 3 months, I'm convinced more than ever that the DVD will soon be just another footnote in the entertainment arena.  I wish I saw the light some 200 DVD purchases ago.  J

Postscript: If you're reading this, my sweet wife, I am still hoping to get The Ghost and Mrs. Muir DVD for Christmas!
