| My wife's purse was stolen at a brownie fair last night. (You know, little girl scouts.) Man, THAT sucks. So you spend the next 24 hours destroying and re-establishing your financial identity. The first thing to do is call the friendly customer support folks at the bank to safeguard the ol' checking account. (Sidenote: if you are in the process of selecting a bank and Key Bank is one of your options, check them out. I've had nothing but positive experiences with them since 2000, particularly in the electronic payment area.) So the bank customer support guy shuts down your checking account faster than the time it takes to sound "ka-ching!" in Quicken 2005. When re-establishing a new checking account under pressure like this, you are reminded how integral the electronic checkbook register is to the everyday life of Everyman: automatic billpay, 529 withdrawals, direct deposit, in-out, with the Lord giving and the Lord taking away. Then there are the credit cards. And chicks like carrying a lot of credit cards. They like having a card for each store they shop in: JC Penneys, Kohl's, Old Navy, whatever. Guys (at least me) want as few cards as possible. A single MasterCard will do ya. But here's the cool thing and why this particular Vermont Nerd is blogging about Stolen Purse Hell. Each credit card is paid electronically in Quicken as an Online Payee, so each payee has a phone number and account number one-click away. Instead of worrying about squirrelling away account numbers and phone numbers in case of theft or loss, there they were right in the app. Nice. | | |
