Changing Channels. The Irrelevance of Digital asks if we want to use the word ‘digital’ in our marketing efforts. There is something prophetic here. “People don't think in channels, they think in terms of getting what they want, when they want it. As content becomes unhinged from legacy devices, the separation between 'platforms' becomes less and less tangible. All this web stuff is going to look like a picnic compared to the horrors that will be dealt to the agency and media businesses when every product has a communications channel built right in.”
Shopping baskets as wish lists. Another reminder that online communities need to provide places—call them baskets, wish lists, lockers or rooms—where members can put stuff.
Being Master of our Domain. A thorough look at the changing nature of blogging in this GigaOm post, where an important takeaway is corporate standards hijacking, censorship, ownership of our content by commercial entities who may or may not be around tomorrow require us to have a blog, feed, url-shortening system, media gallery, a domain, that we control.
Top 50 Social Media Blogs of the Year. Some good ones here, and others I hope to discover. Mashable tops the list. Seth’s Blog comes in at #7.
Facebook is the new address book. Steve Rubel might be on to something here. As a sidebar, one thing that’s cool about the Facebook 3.0 app for the iPhone is that you can upload photos and video. Ultimate SEO Audit continues. This is really an excellent 9 Step series on SEO. Step 2 covers all of the basic analytic points on Titles, H1s, using Google Webmaster tools (and Bing Webmaster Tools, which I didn’t know existed), custom 404s, hyphens instead of underscores, avoiding canonical homepage urls, 302s, and so on and so on.
Internet warning signs. Funny rules of the Internet road that we have all encountered. “Reading online forums may cause irreparable damage to your faith in humanity.” “Use extreme caution when opening images. Whatever you try, it is not possible to un-see something.” “Seemingly innocent words can mean things you do not want to even imagine.”
Vintage Retro Cool. I love vintage and retro styled sites. 30 tutorials here. I hope I can follow along in Photoshop 7.
This fish taco is great! Apparently 80% of Twitter usage is on mobile devices. The implications of that is pretty astounding. “People are no longer just ‘putting up and shutting up’ about a bad experience or poor customer service at a store or restaurant. They are whipping out their phone and tweeting about it as it happens.”
Stop drinking that human fat. Sugary drinks really put on the pounds.
