For Vermont Nerds: A Review of Rosita's Mexican Restaurant

Unless you live in the Burlington, Vermont area or just happen to enjoy restaurant reviews, this post is off topic.  For the 6 Vermont Nerds out there who read my blog (I know who you are), I thought you might like a review of Rositas, a new restaurant on Shelburne Road where Cactus Pete's used to be.

My wife and I are big Mexican food fans, so we had to try Rosita's.  We were pulling into the parking lot when I said to my wife, "Something tells me that this is going to suck." My wife said she felt the same thing.  But being Mexican food fans....

First we go in and there is NO atmosphere.  None.  The walls were painted in muted tones and didn't have a single print on them.  The waitresses were nice, but I wasn't waiting to hear them chatter in Spanish like I might overhear the fellas at La Caretta's, the excellent Mexican restaurant just down the road.  The service was okay.  Nothing special.

The house margarita was the same price as at most restaurants, around $6.00, but it was considerably smaller than what you'd get elsewhere.  And it was AWFUL!  Truly one of the worse margaritas I ever drank.  It had plenty of tequila in it though, so I didn't send it back.  The waitress almost talked me into another one (high tequila content, you know), but I quickly came to my senses realizing that if the bartender in a Mexican Restaurant screws up your margarita, you don't make the mistake of ordering another one.

The menu had maybe 15 items on it.  VERY pitiful menu.  But what it lacked in variety it made up for in price.  It was EXPENSIVE!  Typical entree at La Caretta's is $8.95.  Here, the average price was $15.95.

The food was bland and proportions were barely adequate, especially when considering mine was $15.95 and my wife's cost $16.95.

We ate and asked for the check to get the hell out of there.  $54 bucks with the tip.  What a ream job.  My wife was on call and wasn't drinking and all I had in the drink department was that single nasty house margarita, so it's not like we ran up a drink bill.

I never posted a restaurant review on my blog, but I know I've got some local buds who might consider checking out this place.  Please do yourself and your loved-ones a favor and don't!

I think its the location because Cactus Pete's food was pretty bad.

Ali, that's funny!  I thought the salad bar at Cactus Pete's was okay and I always order a big Prime Rib, so that was tough to screw up.  Maybe its the location influencing the price, since I remember Cactus Pete was pretty expensive.  Thanks for your comment!

Thanks for the insight Dave!  I was thinking about checking out the place.  It's pretty convenient for us, but La Caretta is a stones throw from it, and it's good.   I hate to waste the rare night out!  Smile

Laura, you made my day then!  I wouldn't want you and Neal to experience what we did on a "rare night out!"  (I can relate, by the way!)

geeze - I had  heard it was good from a few people. Rich and I had gone to cactus pete's once and hated it like you feel about the current tenant. Zero atmosphere - blah food, etc. We went to Roque's a few weeks ago - all I remember was that it was noisy. Maybe it's time for another trip to New Mexico.

Julie, Thanks for popping by!  I would love to know what you and Rich thought about Rositas.  Let us know if you and Rich decide to check it out.  Better go soon, because I don't think it will be around for long.

Hi - I've never met you or seen your blog in my life, but I was doing a search on "La Caretta" because a friend and I have been trying to remember which Mexican restaurant on Shelburne Rd was the one that looked good and advertised itself as particularly authentic.  I knew there were two Mexican places on Shelburne Rd and didn't want to go the wrong one.  So it's ROSITA'S that I want????

Hi, Chris!  No, no.  From OUR experience its' LA CARETTA that you want!  Good food, very authentic.  We go there all the time.  Our experience at Rosita's described in this post was quite negative.

I'm happy you were able to visit my blog.  Please let me know what you thought of LA CARETTA (or Rosita's, too!)  If on another blog, please give me the URL.  I'm always looking out for other local bloggers.

Duhhh... yes, let me repeat to myself: NOT Rosita's, La Caretta.... NOT Rosita's, La Caretta.... maybe I'll get it straight by the time it's time to go.

I'll let you know how our visit to LA CARETTA goes.  Here's my blog, but it's mostly a) stupid puns, b) my fiber hobby, and c) the odd book review.

Chris, I'll be looking forward to the review.  Thanks for the URL.  Fun!

I hope you like LA CARETTAS (NOT Rositas), especially since you're driving all the way from Underhill! Smile
