Geek Smatterings: APC, Three Heads, Resizing, ND.EDU, Likeable

MY NEXT UPS WILL BE AN APC.  Something happened in the Vermont hood this morning that rarely happens.  The power went out shortly before 8:00 AM.  So much for my plans on starting work early.  The backup protectors in my office were squawking, of course, so I went around the room and shutdown my four servers, that is, all of them except the one where the backup unit wasn't working.  All of my APC Backup-UPS backup protectors were doing the job, but not my non-APC UPS.  My wife's office APC and my daughter's APC on her bedroom PC were working, too.  Yeah, I think I'll be buying the APC Back-UPS in the future.

I WISH I HAD THREE HEADS.  Smashing Magazine's list of 45 Excellent Blog Designs has some really impressive stylings.  Scrolling through the list and considering a new theme for my site reminded me of that wonderful scene from the movie Amadeus, when Mozart (Tom Hulce) was trying on wigs and exclaimed, "They're all so beautiful. Why don't I have three heads?"

IMAGE RESIZING BRILLIANCE ON DISPLAY.  You need to spend the 8 minutes it takes to watch this YouTube video that Mike Arrington posted on TechCrunch.  Brilliant calculations on display here in resizing images that you've never seen before.  I thought it was interesting that Arrington's title for the post was "I want this in Photoshop Immediately," and then a couple of days later he reported that Adobe hired the co-inventor.

ND.EDU FLASH HOME PAGE WORTH A LOOK.  The re-designed Notre Dame home page was listed in one of my CSS spotlight feeds.  Very cool application of Flash.  I had to download the Flash Player 9.0 to view it, so I must be getting behind in my rich web content experience.  But then, I haven't installed Silverlight either, so that must confirm it.

FEATURING NEGATIVE COMMENTS MAKES YOU MORE LIKEABLE.  I confess that I still subscribe to Scoble's blog as well as to his link blog.  I stopped subscribing to several other A-listers, but I keep Scoble in my radar, though more at the periphery since he left Microsoft.  One of the reasons I continue to tune into Scoble is that he often features the negative things people say about him like he does in "Scoble can't be more wrong."  You have to like that about a guy.

Good speedlinks Dave. I like APC UPS' as well, but wouldn't mind TrippLite either. Have you had any experience with them? Your wife lets you have four servers in the house - that's awesome! Can she come talk to mine? Smile (My wife is great and I don't really have a need for four servers - but you know, stereotypically us geeks are always in trouble for littering too many computers around the house)
Thought you might be interested in a new site I posted. Its called InformedNetworker (www.informednetworker.com). I'm trying to offer a more targeted alternative for IT professionals to Digg. Right now its mainly hardware stuff - since that is what I do full-time, but I'm trying to include development info. as well. If you do have a chance to stop by, I'd love to hear what you think.

Thanks for your comments, David.  No experience with TrippLite, sorry.  IBM and CyberPower are the only other brands that come to mind.  If I were responsible I'd reduce my server count to 3 or possibly even 2.  That's the plan, anyway.  My wife doesn't mind as long as everything stays in my office.

Your new site is awesome, David.  I bookmarked it as "David Mackey Digg Clone" and will check it out more after the holiday weekend camping.
