Geneticist removes gene, Vista Beta installations spike

I read this wonderful bitty in the local paper this morning, Geneticist removes gene, creates daredevil mice.  (Links to Seattle Times.)  A Rutgers University geneticist apparently blocked the production of protein from a gene called stathmin, which is linked to the creation of long-term fear patterns.  My inner-geek took off running with that one.

What if that gene was removed in developers?  For one thing, I wouldn't be such a chickenshit about migrating my development servers from VS2005 Beta2-to-RTM.  That deed would have been done!  Heck, you can forget about any lame conversations about migrating from VS2003 to VS2005.  Let's talk Vista, baby!

No, one thing developers who maintain a stable, trouble-free environment for their users can tell you, fear is a good thing.  If you hear me talking about moving to Vista anytime soon, you'll know someone slipped a stathmin protein suppresser in my Budweiser.

I think you'd need to separate out fear of the unknown from fear based on experience.

If I don't know whether or not Vista will break my computer, then drugging me into installing it isn't so bad.. but knowing that the last time I tried installing Windows Vista on my wife's laptop lead to a bluescreen and an angry wife and spending the rest of the day reinstalling, you'd have to up the dose.

SteveX: You installed Vista???  On a laptop???  Your WIFE'S laptop???

You should consult your doctor, buddy.  I think you already have gene trouble. Smile
