Get your .Text comments by email here!

The comment notification feature is up and running here at DBVT.COM and everything appears to be working as designed.

First of all, what is comment notification?  Comment Notification allows readers to receive all comments to a selected blog post by email, eliminating the need to check back to DBVT.COM.  I wrote it to generate more conversation with readers and save them the hassle of going to http://dbvt.com to receive replies to their comments.

General process description:  Readers must register at dbvt.com with the DotNetNuke registration component so they are known and have a site account.  Registration is automatic and immediate.  Once known, when readers enter a comment they can check a box to receive future comments to that post by email.  Readers receive comments as HTML-formatted emails where links are provided to add another comment or stop receiving comments for the selected post.

I'll provide more detail on how I worked with the .Text source to add this functionality soon.  I'm pretty happy with the results and look forward to any feedback you might have on it.

Hi dave, its me again.
I was browsing through ur blog and noticed that you added some functionality of your own. You provided an option for the users( visitors) to subscribe to a given "post" if they are registered users. Then, down the line if they chose to stop, you  provided an option to withdraw. As far as the admins are concerned, you added an extra layer for the users posts.
Come to think of it, these are pretty basic requirements and I am glad you implemented them.
my question is two-fold. How hard is it to port your code to the next releases. I mean, are you actually messing with the core code or is it completely stand-alone.
The second part is rather selfish. Would you be willing to post the source for the above functionality or a tutorial kinda thing to do it on my own. I am good at programming but I am not familiar with the Data-access-layer of dottext.
I was hoping you can extend some help to give me a headsup.
Thanks and good luck.
Rajesh

Hi rajesh!

Post subscription is a tricky business and is an extensive mod.  I've revised it rather substantially recently, and it is also integrated with DotNetNuke.  So it would be difficult to package.

I'm definitely going to cover it when I speak at Code Camp III in a few weeks, so by that time I may have something packaged up for 0.95.  If I do, I'll certainly have it available on my blog.

In ScottW's post on the future of dotText, subscription by post is definitely part of CS:Blogs.  I'll be moving to CS:Blogs myself and will be investigating the subscription piece, for sure!  Seems to me though that you will still want the human element involved in monitoring and sometimes filtering what gets forwarded to other subscribers.  Or not.

Dvae,
Thanks for answering my query. I actually installed the latest CS package on a local machine and tested it.
Its a great package with Forums, Blogs and gallery integrated into one piece. But my biggest problem is there is no way to integrate it with dotnetnuke. They have a hack which works only with the forums. I already invested a lot of time running various modules on DNN and hence couldn't afford to loose it.
Well. I guess i should wait for someone to come up with the integration stuff.
thanks anyways,
Rajesh

I know you're heavily invested in DNN.  I'm not sure what I'm going to do when I move to CS:Blogs.  It depends on whether DNN 3.x dazzles me when its finally out of beta.  I liked DNN for a while but I'm not seeing the advantage of continuing to use it on my personal site.  Maybe that will change.  Heck, everything does.

I should definitely have something for you on the post subscription piece by Code Camp III in mid-march, in which post subscriptions will be covered.  I have to start getting that talk together.
