Real Annoying

Why is it every Tom, Dick and Plugin think they can reside in my Taskbar?  After repaving this box 6 weeks ago I installed the Real Player plugin yesterday because I wanted to catch a clip of Howard Dean on Letterman on 10/13.  Now a day later, after having forgotten I installed the plugin, it pops up from my taskbar.

Hey, Dick, taskbar residence is by invitation only.  The player install never mentioned it was going to take out a lease, not that I noticed anyway.  Of course, it may have been programmed to ask after the form that asked for my email, address, age and zip code, which is when I stopped playing (no pun intended.)  Then when I did turn off notifications (at least there was a preferences menu option) I get the dreaded WARNING! message.  Nice.

Since I'm currently building a Windows app (with taskbar support--optional...) I am extra-sensitive to aggressive behavior, especially when we're talking about browser plugins.  And as the minister said in The Big Chill, "this is one of those times."

A slick, no-install-required-just-run-the-exe to combat these task bar squatters is SysInternals' Autoruns (www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html)

Man, I hate that.  I install Real so I can listen to the baseball games in the summer.  If they had another way to listen I would use it.

Java runtime,  and Macromedia flash do the same type of thing.   Popping up on the task bar when updates are available.   Guess what,  I don't care.   If I need one, I'll go get it.

The above mentioned Autoruns does a nice job of stopping most of these taskbar hijacks.

Thanks for the autoruns URL, John.  Dave, I'm with you on update popups in principal, but I'd rather have an "update is available" when I run the app (like iTunes, I guess, and certainly like Click Once) than a seemingly random popup.  Then again, this is probably the only way a plugin can stay self-aware, so if it popped up to tell me that a new version of Real was available, I probably would have let it slide.

Real player is filled with nasty adware. Try this instead: www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm

It's a codec to be able to play rm files without that nasty bitch real player ever being in the mix. Worth a shot! ;)

Chris, Thanks for checking in!  If I get Real pissed again I'll definitely check out the alternative player.  Adware, too?  Yeah, nasty bitch real player's days are probably limited on this box.

Hmm ... is it a coincidence that, in that first screenshot, the taskbar button immediately to the left of your notification area is labelled, "Real Mess..."?

Smile
