Rooting for mp3tunes.com

I don't have the big picture grasp of DRM or proprietary formats like Brandon Paddock, Christopher Baus, and others I've been reading to guide my music and online media purchases.  All I want is to not be tied to my iPod on iTunes purchases, or tied to an iRiver (or whatever device on the Windows side) for non-iTunes purchases.  Thus enters your vanilla .MP3 and MP3Tunes.com.

I visited the store several times in hopes of purchasing some Electronica, but I didn't recognize a single artist, and those I did sample pretty much sucked.  The site also has a long way to go on providing a better user experience and to facilitate purchasing.

Apparently mp3tunes.com is getting a lot of traffic, since they posted a note on the home page saying they are disabling search from time to time for performance reasons.  Of course, since no recognizable artists are in the library, searching is pretty pointless.  I'll still root for a simple MP3 distribution model, in spite of my ignorance on the subject.

My take on this is simple.  If artists think it is their best interest to release material on MP3Tunes, great!  More power to them.  If they decided that DRM is better for them, well thats ok with me as well.

DRM is effectively providing legal access to massive amounts of music that  I could only affort through illegal file sharing means before.  DRM provides the infastructure for a deal that make everybody happy.

Christopher, thanks for your input.  As you know from my initial post, I value how you view these issues.  I'll pay more attention to DRM.  I know I don't want to lock into the more closed Apple approach when looking at enjoying my media investment in the long-term.

About Electornica: Check out Røyksopp if you can find them. (Royksopp or Röyksopp alternative spelling.) Norwegian band, their video for "Poor Leno" won MTVE Music Awards best video. Album is called Melody A.M.

Kaisa, I'm always looking for new Electronica.  I searched for both "Royksopp" and "Poor Leno" at MSN Music, iTunes, and mp3tunes and found only two items for Royksopp at iTunes. Those tunes were more heavily dance-beat driven than what I like.  I've always enjoyed your tastes and the skin you created for your dotText blog is one of my very favorites, so I will definitely keep my ears open for them.
