Telligent and Me

I wanted to provide everyone with an update on what's been happening with Telligent and me since my Community Evangelist gig ended last Christmas.  As I described in "No longer a Community Server Evangelist" back in January, my role at Telligent doing full-time work in support and evangelism ended a couple of days before Christmas.  From that point my role was to provide two hours a day of Gold Forums Support and any additional hours in development on client projects.  Cool!  The problem was that the client projects were slow to get rolling and as an Independent Contractor I wasn't billing very many hours or making any money.  It was quite a financial hit to be honest.  After a few weeks I realized I had to view Telligent like any other client, and not as a full-time employer.  That dog just didn't hunt anymore.  So I hung up my Community Server Shingle and the rest, as they say, is in the Event Logs.

I informed Telligent I was no longer available for development work in mid-February when it was clear I didn't have enough time to work on both my client projects and Telligent projects, even though by that time Telligent projects were just starting to ramp up.  I've got fantastic clients and interesting projects, so that was an easy decision to make.  The hard decision--and the one I'm still wrestling with--is, do I continue to spend two hours a day doing Gold Forums support?  Or do I instead spend those two hours on development work for my clients?   If the decision came down to money, my last day in Gold Forums Support would have been last Tuesday, but it's not about money.  It's about my relationships with some of the best developers on the planet, really great guys who I think the world of.  The Wizard, for instance, who is the true star of Gold Forums (and most things CommunityServer.org), has become like a brother to me.  Jose Lema, the Lead Developer on Community Server, is one of the warmest and most generous guys I've even known.  Ken Robertson, another member of the CS Core Team, has been wonderful to me in every way.  The list goes on, and is the reason why it's seriously difficult to cut my official Telligent ties.

But the reality is that from a business perspective, I'll probably have to leave Gold Forums and Telligent altogether and spend that time on client projects.  And I suspect that will probably happen sooner rather than later, so if a post titled "Life After Telligent" finds its way to your RSS reader you'll know what I decided.

Sounds eerily similar to the decision I had to make recently to go back to work for The Man. It's turned out to be one of the best decisions I've made recently though.

You always have to look to the future dude, I know it's a tough decision, but know that if you do end up seeking (different?) pastures, the mark you've left in the CS community is there to stay Smile.

Jayson, I enjoyed reading about your deliberations on your recent changes.  For sure, sounds like it was a smart decision for you (except maybe the VB part. Smile

That's such a wonderful comment about the mark I've made on the CS community.  Thank you!  Hopefully that big CS pasture will allow me to continue sharing my cud for a while longer yet.

Ahh - that explains part of your cryptic email.  I figure you'll stay in touch with these good people even if you discontinue your work in the Gold forums.  Do what makes you happy Dave.  Good luck in finding a resolution you have no regrets about.

WHAT cryptic email??? Smile  Yeah, I guess you're right, Tim.  And yes, if we go for the happiness factor first, the rest should follow.  Thanks.

Haathi, thank you very much for your well wishes.  I'm a CS Forums NNTP Junkie, so I'll sure we'll be seeing each other a lot.

Wizard, that's sweet, but I know better!

I can't get my dog to retrieve a stick let alone hunt so I can totally understand the need to move on.  We're always looking for smart people to help us build on our investment in .NET and Community Server so if you get an itch for the Canadian life feel free to drop me a line! ;)

Hey, Colin!  My dogs used to retrieve sticks, but they're too old.  Thanks for the flattering offer to help out at your happening company, getting to hang with Alice In Chains!  Let me know when you land Seether (or Tool), and I'm in!

Thanks, Erik.  I didn't see your comment until just now.  I forgot to configure my SMTP email on the new server!  Yeah, I think I need to take two weeks off from everything, go skiing every day and see what I feel like afterwards.  But then again, I've got these cool projects that I'm working on.  Eh, I should still go skiing instead! Smile

I am sad to hear this, not that I don't think you'll find good work anyway, but that we might be loosing the voice of Community Server. You have done a tremendeous work both in the Gold Forums and as kind of Telligents or CS's voice in the community. A work that shouldn't be underestimated.

J-O, thanks.  Yeah, I think I accomplished a lot and did a good job promoting CS and Telligent.  Then when an FTE position I was told would occur after 6 months was never offered and my 40 hours a week were suddenly cut to 8 and average at roughly half-time for almost two months it was a wake-up call, for sure.  It was also a valuable learning experience and looking back now its the very best thing that could have happened.

I'll continue to be a voice for Community Server, but it will be my voice, not Telligent's.  And that's a good thing.

That put a smile on my face, Anders.  Thanks.  Will do!  Let me know if you ever have a forums post or CS blog post sitting around out there that I haven't replied to, since I don't want to miss any Anders V. material.  Hey, you probably saw a lot of trackbacks the other day.  Hope you saw my apology post. No matter what your final decision is, you'll always be in my Reader. Tong

Mmm... donuts.  ;)

To be honest, until recently I had always thought you were a FTE of Telligent.  My assumption was based upon all the work you do on promoting CS, the daily updates & news, the assistance in the forums, etc.  Silly me for making such an assumption.

I agree with Jayson, your mark on CS will always be there.  You've been a tremendous asset to the community.  Your evangelism efforts for CS have been second to none.  Your blogging of CS (daily updates, CS bits, etc.) are things I'm always looking forward to reading.  Many times I'll find things that I've missed or haven't been paying attention to.  So in case I've never said it before... THANK YOU!!

Bayonet-Recon Man,

Screw CS.  Donuts is what we live for!

Like I said to J-O above, the FTE thing what was originally in the cards but didn't happen, which (as I also said) turned out as it should and it's all good.

You've got quite a mark on CS yourself, David.  I always thought so, way before I started doing my FTE impersonation last year, so thank you!  Thanks for mentioning the CS bits, too.  I do it with selfish motives since I search it for answers all the time, but its really good to know that other guys find it useful as well.

Thanks so much.  Hope to talk to you again soon.

Dave,

It's not good for your friends and communtiy members but I don't want anything except your success and am pretty sure your decision is to be success.  Wherever you are, you're our dear friend.  Your effect on community can't be forgotten.

Good luck my man Smile

Thanks, K-man.  Hey, enjoy your time off from the army.  I wish I had weekends and time off when I was in the US Army way back when.  The Iranian Army sounds like it's a party time. Smile
