The DBVTCS21 Era Begins

Well, we're up!  There are mods yet to do, but since I was already the last guy I know coming to the CS 2.1 party, I didn't want to make things worse than they already were.  Besides, The Wizard was putting the squeeze on, questioning my manhood over the delay, or something to that effect.  It's wonderful knowing I'm using CS 2.1.  It's so crisp to use, and even has that new t-shirt smell.

What can I tell you about the upgrade?  For starters, this upgrade (my 4th on WebHost4Life) was by far the smoothest ever because for the first time I used WH4L's Unzip feature in the User Control File Management Panel.  I zipped up most of the CS root directories, ftp'd to the site, and unzipped the folder tree into the appropriate directory.  Huge timesaver.

Then I ran the SQL CS2.0_to_CS2.1 script and waited.  And waited some more.  Took almost 5 minutes to run, but heck, as long as it didn't abort I was happy!  Then I hit the site and, no surprise, got an "Unable to Serve Your Request" error page.  I hope the CS Developers don't ever change the default CS error page.  It's like an old friend who appears from time-to-time.  I've known him now for years.  A quick peek at the cs_exceptions table revealed that I needed to run the ASP.NET 2.0 Membership update SQL script.  Aspnet_Profile_GetProperties @CurrentTimeUtc System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException.  I forgot whether I ever ran this on my WebHost4Life site or not, so it was better to not run the script and get the error than run any SQL script a second time.

My upgrade was pretty boring actually.  Sorry.  I'll post about the site itself next.

Unzip feature?! Cool, never seen it! I will use it next time also!

Question though. I started with .Text on ASP.NET 1.1. Does running on ASP.NET 2.0 have any benefits? Think I should upgrade?

Thanks,
Dennis

ASP.NET 2.0 definitely performs better than ASP.NET 1.1.  Not a lot, but some.  BIG YES on upgrading, Dennis, if for no other reason than to work with CS in VS2005.  Let me know what you decide.

Regards!
Dave

++i for running CS2.1 on ASP.NET 2.0...all of the medium trust issues (seem) to have been ironed out, and it just feels quicker. Plus going forward I'm sure they will be moving to 2.0 only at some point.

That unzipping feature on WH4L sounds neat, need to recommend that to the ASPnix guys (though they gladly will manually unzip archives you upload).

Long live DBVT.com!

Jayson makes a good point on ASP.NET 2.0, CS and Medium Trust.  Yes, that was an issue in 2.0, but has been taken care of in CS 2.1.

"Long live DBVT.com!"  Too funny.  Thanks!

Oh, I guess now you're going to try and deny putting the pressure on me to upgrade to CS 2.1.  Yeah, right.
