The Dawning of DBVT2008

I am very happy to announce the release of DBVT2008, the dawn of a new era at dbvt.com.  The biggest difference you'll find in DBVT2008 is no "Powered by [anything Telligent]" logos anywhere.  That's right.  No Community Server.  No Graffiti.  I am using strictly Open Source .NET applications on dbvt.com, Mads Kristensen's BlogEngine.Net for my blog and an application called Gallery Server Pro by a young man from Wisconsin named Roger Martin for my photo gallery.  You know about BlogEngine.Net, and while few people know about Gallery Server Pro, they both rock.  There are several DBVT2008 technical issues I'm looking forward to blogging about regarding migration, integration, SEO and so forth, but not tonight.

Those of you who have been with me a while (years, many of you) and know my history with Telligent and Community Server may regard my DBVT2008 transition as a rather big deal.  Well yeah, it is.  Sorry for not expanding on where my head's at and where I'm going.  I will, I promise.  Tonight I want to post a simple new site announcement in the hope you'll stop by to check out my new crib.  As for the rest, I'll let Dr. Lanning's hologram do the talking for me.

Spooner: Hello, doctor.
Lanning: Everything that follows is a result of what you see here.
Spooner: Is there something you want to tell me?
Lanning: I'm sorry. My responses are limited. You must ask the right questions.
Spooner: Why did you call me?
Lanning: I trust your judgement.
Spooner: Is there something you want to say to me?
Lanning: I'm sorry. My responses are limited. You must ask the right questions.
Spooner: Why would you kill Community Server at dbvt.com?
Lanning: That, detective, is the right question. Program terminated.

The site looks great, Dave, but you're right - I'm quite shocked at your sudden departure from the Telligent tools. Looking forward to your post explaining the decision.

Are you still involved in CS as part of your day-to-day job? That was your bread and butter, right?

Hey, Mab!

In answer to your question, yes, CS is still my bread and butter. I had to do this on moral grounds.  More when I can.

Thank you so much for your response.

I've been wanting to do the same - however, am a bit more committed to Telligent than I want to be. What's worse is that CS started off with open source tools - nGallery, .Text, and has now morphed into a product salivating greed. Pave the wave Dave - we'll soon be following you.

Dear "Telligent Haters,"

I certainly didn't mean to start a movement here or anything, but to elaborate on my response to the Mabster, yes, CS is 100% of my bread and butter, but sometimes moral imperatives supersede the bottom line.

Thanks for the nGallery and .Text references.  Personally, I never would have guessed that the 2004 dbvt.com site I built back then would have morphed into the Telligent corporate entity we serve today.

"morphed into a product salivating greed..."  Excellent.

Thanks,
Dave

New site looks great Dave.  I'm glad you've come around to BlogEngine.Net since your initial writeup wasn't too positive.

Not to push the Telligent bashing too much but it's quite a shock to see you moving away as well.  It's a real shame what has happened to Community Server in a little more than a year.

New site looks nice Dave.   A bit surprised at the change but as they say, life goes on.

I can't say I regret leaving CS, it was fine, just not for me. Though my little blog has seen little attention of late so the point may be moot.

Hi, Tom!  It's been a while.  Thanks for the welcome to BE.  As for my initial negative post on BlogEngine.Net, I have a history of that, unfortunately.  Back in 2005 I wasn't too enthusiastic for CS 1.0 and Tim Haines' "Dave Burke gives Community Server the Thumbs Down" post will forever remind me of it.

I come around eventually. Smile

Thanks, Dave!  What ya mean about your "little blog?"  I've been a subscriber for going on four years now.  You've been a bit quiet lately is all.

Like the new look of your site very much, Dave.  A very clean look that make the information very accessible.

Anxiously awaiting the Everyman Links entry.

Nice site Dave!  I'm just now starting to redesign an upgrade of my site and looking at blog engines.  Any chance you did a review of the ones you looked at?

I'm either looking at writing my own or using a free/open source one ... not because I don't like any of the products (like telligent) but more because I'm cheap Smile

Nice work man!

Hey, Mikey!  Thanks for the feedback.  It's not as nice as State Street (not enough yellow), but I like it.  I started an Everyman last night, but it didn't pass editorial muster so I'll try again today.

Mr. Big City Seattle Man (who walks to work!), I wouldn't say you're cheap.  You're always a generous guy when you're in Beantown for Code Camp.  As for other blogging apps, I want to gather more information on that and blog on it.  I don't know if you're into MVC, but Keyvan Nayyeri wrote a basic blogging engine that looks pretty interesting.

Hi Dave.  Welcome to the dark side.  I can't wait to hear your reasons for switching.  I switched from CS2007 to WordPress/Gallery/PHP/MySQL back in January and haven't looked back since.

Hey, Vince.  I'm really liking this dark side.  It feels good here!  Wow, from CS2007 to PHP/MySQL on Linux.  Now that's a switch!  Thanks for the comment.

I'm a bit ashamed to say....WordPress/Gallery/PHP/MySQL ...on IIS6/W2K3 in a Virtual PC on Vista Home Premium.  VPC on Home Premium is unsupported.  Works just fine though.

Erik, thanks for reading my services page on my new approach to what I am offering and what I want to be doing for folks.  In the meantime I'll keep doing what I'm doing and hope to land up in 100% Open Source work in due course.  Onward and upward for you, too, my friend!

Nice changes Dave..I noticed them last night and was taken aback at first...but i guess i could see this coming as CS related posts have become few and far between...and barriers to entry have skyrocketed on the CS front...Good luck moving forward!

Kevin, I hope we can maintain contact. Your communications with me on Community Server issues always meant a lot to me. Yes, barriers to entry in CS have skyrocketed, a very significant driver in my change of direction. Thanks for the well wishes!

Congratulations on your professional & bug free outing for the new DBVT. Wonder how many hits & downloads you caused at BlogEngine.NET in the last day or two? Many I suspect, myself included. Might you have (also) a Forum option in your kitbag of ideas?

Hey, Nick! (Love the flag.) You know I never pushed the forums envelope like you do at emrupdate.com, but yeah, I've been hanging out over at yetAnotherForum.Net. It hosts a number of large communities and there's a lot of enthusiasm for it on the YA forums. Take care, Buddy. Thanks for visiting.

Hey Dave,

Everything happens for a reason and knowing yours, I applaud you on following your convictions. Suffice to say, you're not alone out there, buddy. The times, they are a-changing...

Anyway, all the best with the new era of DBVT - I'll be watching with great interest to see how it develops!

P.S.
I loved the "I, Robot" metaphor... Smile

Hi Gary!  Thank you for the great send-off.  (This should mean that 4-Roads gets even more business.  You guys are doin' it!)  Yeah, every now and then you have to become a newbie again.  I have big plans on the Open side of the world, so I do hope you hang around.  Yes, Dr. Lanning is good, Dr. Lanning is wise.
