The death of my new iPod Classic

The 160GB Video iPod Classic I bought less than 3 months ago died yesterday while I was exercising on my [NordicTrack] Ski Machine, the very first time I used it while on the ski machine, in fact.  Its screen froze about 20 minutes into the session and then displayed a red circle with an "X" in it.  I knew I was in trouble, immediately jumping off the exercise machine to do hard resets and try bringing it up in Disk Mode as a solution described on the Apple Support site.

When I realized it wasn't coming back to life I was depressed and angry.  It was ridiculous, really, to be that distraught over a stupid electronic device that died, but there it was.  My new iPod was gone.

I didn't get extended coverage at Circuit City for the iPod, so I knew they couldn't help me when I went there with it this morning.  I was out $369 bucks.  The money didn't bother me, I was mourning the loss of my iPod.

Screw it.  I'm buying a Zune!

Secretly this was the excuse I needed to go Zune.  I'm still familiarizing myself with my new Zune 80, but it's very sweet!  I'll blog about it more, I'm sure, but the story of my iPod is not over yet.  I submitted an online Apple service request and have to say that I was very impressed.  It required the entry of my Apple account info, my dead iPod's serial number, 2 or 3 dropdowns to identify the problem and a brief description of the problem.  Within an hour I received what was obviously a human-proxied email informing me that a postage-paid shipping box would be sent to my home in which I was to place my iPod for return to Apple to be fixed or replaced at no cost to me.

I'll be sure to tell you how it plays out.

William, thank you for your comment and the link.  The service request processing probably accounted for that, which is why the response was so quick and effortless on my part.  I actually received the postmarked shipping box to return the ipod this morning!  Will let you know.

I've owned an iPod and Zune (1st gen) and I don't think there is much difference between them - makes sense to get an iPod if you are into iTunes and all that fun stuff, but if like me you buy the CD and burn it and use windows media player then the Zune is a great choice.

I think if I were to buy another mp3 player then it would defintaley be the Zune, never had any problems with it, I like the UI, ok its not that compact but its a pretty large drive in there.

Hope you get the iPod fixed though as thats quite a lot of money to just write off :-(

Granville, you're right about the similarities between the Zune and the iPod.  And you're also right that $369 is a lot of money to write off!  I didn't mean to sound so cavalier about it.  Yeah, its a lot alright.

I hope the fix/replacement goes smoothly as well.  My daughter is excited about the prospect of taking over her old man's new iPod!

Great to hear from you.

Zune!  You really ARE a maverick, Dave.  Just like back in the day when you were singing the praises of O/S2.  If you hurry, you can still get an HD-DVD player.  I will look forward to your posts on the Zune experience.  I'm not nearly man enough to go that route.  I'm sticking with my iPod.  In fact, with each passing day, my resistance to an iPhone purchase is weakening.

Mikey,  No one needs more in a phone than the RAZR.  And don't make me drag up eyewitness accounts of you enthusiastically selling Windows NT 3.5....  And make no mistake, OS/2 rocks!  I keep Christmas Tree ornaments in my OS/2 box so I get to see it every holiday season.  Not only that, but I still use an OS/2 mousepad.  Thanks for visiting!
