Three Weeks into a Zune Pass

Having access to the full cuts of millions of songs and classical performances with the Zune Pass has changed how I experience music, and at three weeks into a Zune Pass I think I can draw some conclusions.

Below are the additions to my Zune Collection since I became Zune Pass Man.  My tastes aren't yours, but here are some observations about what's different with The Pass that you can probably relate to.

First of all, none of the items below were "purchased," yet I can listen to them until I'm sick of them.  MP3 Download Retail for the album grid below is probably around $200 bucks.

Not shown are at least 10 albums I downloaded from the Zune Marketplace that I liked but afterward decided against keeping them on my Zune. Right-click, delete.  One of those behavioral shifts; you don't have to download and store the music you like just because you can.

Another aspect of The Pass is that all mp3 files are treated the same.  Yo-Yo Ma playing the Bach Cello Suites is the same value as, say, an obscure Brecker Brothers jazz fusion album that I wanted to purchase forever (I got rid of the album years ago) that I was surprised to discover in the Zune Marketplace.  Needless-to-say, it's great hearing Skunk Funk again.

You'll see that I added a few albums to my Christmas 2008 music collection.  My favorite is, of course, the soundtrack of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer featuring Burl Ives.  (When faced with a tough life decision, I always ask myself, "What would Burl do?")  Oscar Peterson's version of White Christmas isn't bad either, but it's tough to top Burl Ives in my book.

Music discovery is another Zune Pass behavioral change.  Zune Marketplace's "Related Artists" is very good and leads you to lots of new music.  And with the draw of being able to instantly download the entire library of any new discovery, it's easy to while-away latenight hours searching for new music.  Of the artists above, I'd say the most enjoyable new discovery of the last three weeks has been Pitchshifter and their "Desensitized" album.  Here's the full cut of Diable from the Desensitized album on last.fm. Very tasty metallic stylings.

More on the discovery aspect of The Pass. I was searching for a particular cover of "In Your Eyes," by Peter Gabriel.  I remember stopping in my tracks listening to it in a Kohl's Department Store in 2006, which was the first and last time I heard it.  Zune Search brought it home for me.  Jeffrey Gaines, from Harrisburg, PA.  Below is the "In Your Eyes" search result.  Gaines was #2 in the list. Here is a 30 second clip of his Eyes cover on Amazon.

Adapting to the Zune Pass is adapting to music overload, changing the way you experience music through a seemingly unlimited choice.  A Zune software download and 14-day trial Pass subscription gets you there.  Think about it.

Postscript: Is it possible to become a Microsoft Zune MVP?  Just curious...

I've heard that "In Your Eyes" cover before, too, but had no idea who did it. Thanks for the link, Dave. Nothing could be as good as the original, but it's pretty darned good.

I just got the wife a Zune for her birthday in a couple of days, shhh - don't tell. I'm looking forward to checking out Zune Pass. One of the specific reasons is to be able to check out cover songs. We have a local radio station that had an "all-cover" weekend recently that my whole family loved. I find it interesting listening to another artist's interpretation of an original. In the car I'm constantly telling my wife, "that old song would sound great as a new cover - a little more guitar and some coarser vocals". What song wouldn't sound better with more guitar!?!?

Anyway, thanks for digging that one up, Dave!

Thanks for the comments, Dan.  I hope your wife enjoys her Zune (and Pass.)  14 day trial, remember, so nothing lost.

How excellent you're familiar with the In Your Eyes cover!  It took me almost 2 years, but we found it.  Loved the "guitar and coarser vocals" description.

Your comment got my Monday off to a great start.

I think Zune MVP awards have been given to people who've helped develop / grow the Zune community - See:

www.zunethoughts.com/.../...community-leaders.html for 2007 MVP awards.

Leo, thanks for the Zune MVP link!  I didn't know that.  Getting a Zune MVP award sounds like a lot more work than I thought.  I guess I'll keep paying for my MSDN Subscription.  Smile

Dave, I do believe you're getting into the (Christmas) Holiday spirit a little early. There is much to do, many things to tweak plus strategy to refine before your stop work for the Holidays. Oh ... all right then, some Bing in the background while we code. What else is Santa bringing for you?

Great Brit, Work proceeds in the US of A.  And as the musics streams, something wonderful is coming for Christmas.  Thanks for the reminder!

Great call on In Your Eyes!

Like all 15 year old girls, I've loved that song since watching "Say Anything".

Have a listen to Ryan Adam's version of Wonderwall off his "Love is Hell" cd - I think you'd like that too, even though it's a bit of a slower tempo track.

I'd love to get a Zune and get on that system, unfortunately along with every other wonderful piece of technology out there hamstrung by international copyright and licensing issues, we can't get it in Australia.

One day we'll get Netflix/Xbox videos/Zunes/Hulu/etc *sigh*

Browncoat, Thanks for the Ryan Adams recommendation.  My favorite from him is "Desire" from the "Demolition" CD, but "Love in Hell" brought out the 15-year-old girl in me!

Sorry about the Aussie time delay in receiving new toys.  You have to incur some penalty for all of the great Australian beer down there, I guess.

I love Zune. I have downloaded so many songs from the marketplace that not all my songs on my PC fit into my Zune. The best part of the Market place is that there are so many whole albums. And it's real cheap to have a monthly membership...I think it's like $14.99 or something...But you know what sucks...Sometimes songs or albums aren't available at all...Or you have to purchase the CD. Albums by Juan Luis Guerra don't exist, or the songs aren't available. Same thing with Stone Temple Pilots. But there are  millions of songs available. Their Jazz selection is pretty impressive.

Speed Dating NYC, I hear you!  It's always a surprise to discover an artist's works aren't available, but the good thing is that those are the exception.

I love the whole album aspect of the Pass as well. One of the things I've been doing is listening to many of the old albums I used to have on vinyl that I got rid of years ago, some of which I can't find available anywhere else.  It's great going back and listening to the entire album again.

Thanks for visiting!
