This post from Tim Bray is ancient, almost two weeks old, but I wanted to make sure to link to it. I think it was already tech-meme'd, so you probably already saw it. If you missed it, you should take a minute to read it. It SO captures the sentiment a lot of us have toward WS-*.
I remember Adam Bosworth mentioning in his scalable databases MySQL presentation about WS-* being overtly complicated to protect the proprietary interests of the participants, and that any standard that requires two years to develop is probably not a good thing.
