To CS21: Winmerge is the cat's pajamas

I decided to follow Ben Tiedt's instructions on how to migrate Community Server 2.0 themes to Community Server 2.1 the moment I read them.  I knew this was the way to go, and it began by downloading WinMerge (Ben provides the links.)

In about two hours I pretty much applied my CS 2.0 themes to CS 2.1, the smart way, without losing anything from the CS 2.1 Masters, Stylesheets or Skins that I would have paid for later in one way or another.

The above comparison of the BlogMaster.ascx files is a good example of how WinMerge speeds up the process on porting CS 2.0 Themes to CS 2.1.  (CS 2.0 version is on the left.)  We can see at a glance that we want to port over the GEO Metatags and that at the bottom (already changed in the screenshot) we want to change the position of the sidebar column from the default right-hand side (MPContent id="rcr") to the left at id="lcr."  Lickety split.  Next file.

I spent another hour or so playing with the site today and you can see below that we're close on duplicating the CS2.0 DBVT look-and-feel.

Something worth mentioning is the valuable contributions the Telligent Development Team Members makes almost every day, providing top dollar information on the cheap, both in CS Forums and on their personal blogs.  They don't have to do that, you know, but this is another example where I sure am glad they do.

Essential for CS development.

Brendan, Thanks for the advice.  I do one smart thing a week, and Winmerge filled my quota.  I'll definitely look at Beyond Compare though.  I know ScottW and others recommend it.  Thanks!

Winmerge is great! I've been using it since Ben Tiedt posted about it

Yousa!  I've been doing the same thing Jaxon Rice has been doing!  Yeap, Ben's article showed me the light, alright.  Thanks for visiting, Jaxon.

Beyond Compare is good; another one to check out is Araxis Merge (http://www.araxis.com/).

I think WinMerge is great. Whenever I recommend it, people always tell me I should be using Beyond Compare or Araxis Merge, but they can never give me any good reasons why. Usually the features they brag about have been added to WinMerge a while ago.

I think people looked at WinMerge a few years ago and wrote it off. It's a great tool, and the dev team releases very frequently. As I became more impressed with the program, I started using the Beta builds, then the Experimental builds. The Experimental builds have been rock solid - better quality than production releases for a lot of other software I use.

The only downside of WinMerge is the lack of 3 way merge, which is important for applying patches. Other than that, WinMerge is soooooper!
