To MS Developers, Size Matters

I don't know, man.  I've always been more of a "its the motion of the ocean" kind of guy, but it seems to me that when our pals at Microsoft started packaging-up Beta 2.0, bigger was perceived as obviously better.

Of course, you can't argue with the bigger-is-better principal, but I'm hung (well, not really) on the 8 hours it took me so far to download the 2.9 GB Standard Edition image file at broadband speeds, 2.5 hours to copy it to another machine on my standard 10MB office network, and 3 hours to extract the files from the ISO image to my hard-drive.

And oh boy, soon I get to click on VS\Setup.exe!  When I muster-up some additional manliness, I will continue The Quest.  But not today.

Not today.

Ah, the pain is shared by all.  At least when I had to copy it was from an external HD over usb2.  One way to alleviate some of the pain, though, is mount the image directly using something like Daemon-tools.  I've been a huge fan of Daemon-tools for years, and have had it running on almost every machine I setup without fail.  It saves alot of time when dealing with CD images.

Thanks, Aaron.  I noticed Daemon tools on the MSDN downloads page as an option to ISOBuster.  Will definitely have to give it a look.  Regards!

Hey, the pain is NOT shared by all!

For me, the experience of downloading and installing beta 2 was a breeze!  It went super smooth and fast, and yes, that's including the download.  I downloaded it that same Friday when it was released on MSDN, and the whole 2.9 gigs were completed in less than an hour !!!  And yes, that was on my cheap ($45/month) Internet connection at home, here in Belgium.

Extracting the ISO definitely took no more than 5 minutes on my PC! Installation finally was something like 30 mins...

Sorry to learn about your struggle, but I thought you should know that the problem lies with your hardware (and Internet connection), not with Microsoft or the installer!
