I didn't get
Digg for a while, kinda like I didn't get del.icio.us or technorati. It was time to investigate.
The concept of Digg is pretty straightforward. Users submit stories to the site in one of digg's current 16 categories. The categories are pretty geeky: robots, software, linux/unix, apple (but no Microsoft), programming, and so on. Then users peruse those stories submitted and vote (or digg) them. When a story receives a certain number of diggs it is promoted to the Digg Home Page.
I've been digging for two weeks now and have to say I enjoy Digg quite a bit. I don't peruse stories when first submitted regularly (but appreciate those who take the time to do so), nor have I ever submitted a story, but I do enjoy the Digg Feed of Home Page stories. It provides exposure to technical, creative or otherwise, geeky happenings that I wouldn't have discovered elsewhere. Digg will be much more interesting to me personally when there are more categories to drill into.
I've added a
Digg Stories Dugg link to my blog sidebar menu, along with my Flickr, Technorati, and other links, which will display my ongoing list of stories I voted on, or dugg.
After two weeks I've dugg five stories only, among them this hilarious
video mashup of Brokeback Mountain and Back to the Future, and a saliva-producing article on advances in
paper-like electronic display. btw, there's a link to a great new
UK Honda Civic commercial on the list, a chorus making automobile sounds in sync with a Civic in motion. Click on the "WATCH" link to view the commercial, but know that the page makes sounds immediately upon loaded. Not work safe.
